Chapter Ten

“Good morning,” Bunny called out. The ding over the coffeehouse door told me someone was there, though it had taken a few seconds to register.

Last night felt like a blur. Add to that a sleepless night because I was up thinking about who on earth had a motive to kill poor Lana. I had been around her for only a little while, but I was having a hard time trying to imagine what she could possibly do to make someone so mad that they murdered her.

All of that was on my mind, and based on the history of what happened around here when someone died, the coffeehouse was going to be busy.

It was going to be a long day.

I peeked out the swinging door and saw Bunny and Mae Bell.

“You back here, Roxy?” Bunny and Mae Bell Donovan were walking through the Bean Hive. “Mae Bell, here.” She put her hand out. “Give me your coat.”

Mae Belle and Bunny were my first real customers at the Bean Hive when I opened. They were considered regulars. They came in at the same time every day, sat at the same table, and ordered the same thing. And they looked alike. They dressed alike and liked to eat the same things.

One day I was so busy, Bunny got tired of waiting for me to top off her coffee, so she got up and topped off hers and everyone else’s. That was when she hired herself.

Mm-hmmm, she hired herself, and I just went with it.

“I’m here.” I walked out of the kitchen and watched the two fumble with their buttons, hats, and pocketbooks before they got all situated. “You’re here really early.”

“I was just coming in to help, honey. I figured we’re gonna have a big crowd today, seeing what happened and all.” Bunny pointed at a table off to the side for Mae Belle to sit in. Then Bunny sat down with her.

I kind of snickered because I knew she was here to listen to all the hearsay. Mae Belle, on the other hand, was in charge of the prayer chain, which was what we called gossip around here.

Unfortunately, they believed that when you gossiped on the prayer chain, it counted as praying for the people you were gossiping about.

Now, if they were talking about it while not discussing it on the prayer chain call, it was considered gossip.

See the difference?

“You’re right. We are going to be busy, and I didn’t get a wink of sleep, so you two are in for a very special treat this morning.” The coffee pots had all brewed, so I knew the special Christmas Blend I’d roasted and ground this morning would be a tasty treat.

“Do you got some of that good breakfast casserole?” Mae Belle asked.

“That’s not my treat, but I bet I can get you a slice.” The walk-in freezer contained so many different casseroles I could easily pop into the oven for special occasions or even when I ran out of something else.
